A Monterey native and Santa Clara University School of Law graduate, Mr. Panetta began his long and distinguished public service career in 1964 as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Prior to his appointment as the U.S. Secretary of Defense by President Barack Obama, Secretary Panetta held a distinguished career in a variety of public office positions. As a public servant, he served as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, White House Chief of Staff, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and a United States Representative on behalf of the California Central Coast. Concurrently, Mr. Panetta joined with his wife Sylvia to establish and co-direct the Panetta Institute for Public Policy, based at California State University, Monterey Bay.
